Saturday
Today’s ride : 10 am departure | 95.6km / 59.4 miles – 522m / 1,713 feet
We will greet you in St Kilda at 9am and help you put your bikes together before we depart for day 1 of the tour, a 95.6km ride down to the Mornington Peninsula. The course will take us down Beach Road, one of the most popular cycling routes in Australia, as we hug the coastline down to our lunch stop in Mornington where you’ll have views of the city across the bay.
There are a few more rolling hills after lunch, before we reach Safety Beach where the road flattens. As we ride through Dromana, Rosebud, Rye, Blairgowrie and Sorrento you will see why these areas are so popular with Melburnians during summer, with campgrounds right on the waters edge, white sandy beaches and calm waters.
A few rolling hills from Sorrento will take us to our final destination for the day, the small seaside village of Portsea. Following check-in you will have some time to relax by the pool, go for a walk along the beach or enjoy a few well earned drinks at the bar. Dinner tonight will be in the Portsea Hotel, overlooking the water.
Sunday
Today’s ride : Today’s ride : 9am departure | 126km / 78.3 miles – 1,043m / 3,422 feet
Today we will explore much of the Mornington Peninsula as we ride from one side of the peninsula to the other. There are some more challenging climbs ahead as we ride through the many hills in the area. The landscape is forever changing as we ride through thick forests, open paddocks, past wineries and so much more.
It would be a shame to ride past all these wineries without stopping at one for lunch. So, we’ll take some time off the bike to enjoy a beautiful lunch at a winery and taste some of their award winning wines. There will be a few climbs after lunch before we drop down to the coast again, before making our way back to Portsea.
Dinner tonight will be a short drive away in Sorrento where we will enjoy another tasty meal together.
Monday
Today’s ride : 8am departure | 104km / 64.9 miles – 1,221m / 4,006 feet
The day we’ve all been waiting for has arrived! We finish today’s ride at the Peninsula Hot Springs.
The start to the day will be another highlight as we ride to Point Nepean, the most westerly point of the Mornington Peninsula. Point Nepean is rich in history with evidence of Australian Aboriginal settlement of the area dating back 40,000 years. Plus, it played an important role in shaping the early settlement and defence of Australia. Gun batteries were first installed at Fort Nepean in 1886 and remained in place to defend Australia until the end of World War II. A wonderful insight into early Australia.
We will then head back along the coast with our major climb of the day getting bigger and bigger as we get closer. Arthur’s Seat is a challenging 3km climb with an average gradient of 8%, but the views from the top are absolutely worth it.
Following a hot coffee and cake at Eagle on the Hill cafe we commence our descent down to the other side of the Mornington Peninsula to Point Leo for a quick photo opportunity. More hills lay ahead as we make our way towards our final destination.
We will arrive at the Peninsula Hot Springs in time to enjoy an amazing lunch before spending the rest of the afternoon bathing in the hot springs and getting an optional massage. Now this is the way all rides should finish!
We will spend tonight in the newly opened Peninsula Hot Springs accommodation and enjoy our last dinner together and celebrate an awesome few days of cycling.
Tuesday
It’s time to say farewell and we are more than happy to help you with any further travel plans or we’ll arrange for a transfer back to Melbourne or Melbourne Airport.
You’ll head home with amazing memories of your time cycling around this beautiful region.
